Hiking with bear spray and/or in a group is recommended. The area of the trail is also a well known grizzly bear area, so hikers should be prepared for bear encounters. ![]() ![]() The switchback ascent to the tunnel is the most difficult part of the hike. The tunnel is reached by a set of switchbacks after hikers pass Ptarmigan lake on the trail. Many of the trails in National Parks were built by the CCC during the depression. The 230 foot tunnel was built the by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for access by tourists and horses in the park. Built in the 1930s through the Ptarmigan Wall at an elevation of 7,200 feet. The Tunnel is definitely the highlight of the trail and most day hikers turn around once they pass through the tunnel. If I had more time I would have combined the hike with the larger multi-day hike that leads people further into the backcountry. While it was not my ultimate favorite hike, I really did find the tunnel to be very cool, and the view out of this world. However, the views make it all worthwhile.There are a lot of great hikes in Glacier National Park, but few have something as cool as Ptarmigan Tunnel. Some consider the beginning the steepest, but overall, it's a challenging workout. While it's a short hike, be ready for significant elevation gain and a mix of steep sections. If you're up for it, we highly recommend taking the out-and-back route to Granite Park Chalet. And you might get lucky and spot some wildlife like bears, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats along your trek. This hike is a must-do and offers some seriously epic views. Lastly, if you plan on camping overnight in the wilderness, you'll need to obtain a permit from Glacier National Park. Remember to leave your dogs at home as they aren't allowed on the trail. The best times to visit this trail are June through October. You'll likely encounter other people while exploring.
